Wood is recruiting Design Managers to become part of our talented Sustainable Infrastructure team.

We are looking for engineers to lead multi-disciplinary teams and delivery projects. We are looking for people that bring the following qualities to our team:

Management and Support of People

  • Taking ownership of the project outcomes
  • Managing internal design coordination activities
  • Managing external design coordination activities between the design team and the client
  • Trouble shooter / problem solver ; aiding resolution of challenges
  • Motivating the team to ensure that outputs are delivered in line with the agreed programme
  • Coach and mentor designers and actively contribute to the technical development of skills throughout the wider team

Project delivery and governance

  • Perform ‘lead engineer’ and ‘project manager’ role for water sector design projects
  • Deliver the design to a high quality in line with internal & external expectations (including client asset standards)
  • Participate in proposals, scoping technical work packages and resourcing/time estimates
  • Preparation and/or review of design deliverables including specifications, calculations, reports, 3D models and production drawings
  • Provide technical, risk and value challenge to teams
  • Maintain clear delivery processes and procedures
  • Manage governance activities in line with Wood and Client assurance systems
  • Deliver the design in line with the agreed programme and budget
  • Perform contract administration to manage change
  • Identify project stakeholders and the requirements for satisfactory engagement
  • Chair necessary meetings and workshops with clients and project stakeholders

Client relationship management

  • Main point of contact with client on delivery matters; advising on progress, blockers and salient issues
  • Build relationships with client representatives to reinforce trust and to enhance the reputation of our brand
  • Support effects to ensure the team achieves excellent customer feedback and KPI scores

Best practice

  • Manage the identification and implementation of innovative / novel approaches and technology
  • Manage the capture of lessons learned, embedding feedback and ensuring continual improvement in our service
  • Liaise with other suppliers to share knowledge and lessons learnt

Qualifications

You will be degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline; ideally a chartered engineer and in possession of a valid UK driving license.

Desirable experience as follows (depending upon previous roles held by the candidate):

  • Experience in NEC PSC contract administration
  • Experience in 3D design review
  • Experience in delivery of contractor-led design projects
  • Experience in commercial and legal aspects of consultancy work
  • Experience in application of ‘design for manufacture’ and ‘modern methods of construction’ principles
  • Experience in discharging Designer duties under CDM Regulations
  • Experience in leading design review meetings, HAZOP / ‘what-if’ reviews
  • Experience in mentoring early-career engineers / apprentices
