Lely1
Site Reliability Engineer
Job description
At Lely, software and cloud technology are essential to the future of autonomous dairy farming. Our development teams build solutions that are used by farmers around the world every day. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you help ensure these solutions remain reliable, scalable, secure, and easy to operate.
Unlike many SRE roles, this is not a position focused solely on maintaining existing infrastructure. You will join a newly established Site Reliability Engineering team within our Developer Experience Competence Center, working closely with colleagues in Platform Engineering, Technology Engineering, Product Security, and software development teams across Lely. Together, you shape engineering standards, improve cloud-native development practices, reduce operational effort through automation, and enable development teams to build and operate reliable, scalable software with a strong focus on observability and developer experience. One of the key initiatives you'll contribute to is Diagnostics as a Service, helping development teams build the observability capabilities that allow thousands of robots in the field to be monitored and diagnosed effectively. Together with engineering team, you help make operational insights available where they create the most value.
Your main responsibilities include:
- Designing and improving Site Reliability Engineering practices, with a strong focus on automation, reliability, scalability, and observability.
- Supporting development teams by improving CI/CD pipelines, GitOps workflows, and cloud-native engineering practices.
- Identifying opportunities to reduce operational toil through automation and managed platform solutions.
- Helping development teams build effective observability practices, guiding them in monitoring their services, and using operational insights to drive continuous improvements through data and root-cause analysis.
- Coaching engineering teams and promoting best practices around reliability, DevOps, and modern software delivery.
- Collaborating with colleagues across Platform Engineering, Product Security, and Software Development to continuously improve the developer experience.
- Participating in architectural discussions and helping shape technical decisions that improve the reliability, scalability, and operability of our software platforms.
You are an engineer who enjoys improving systems as much as helping other engineers succeed. You combine a software engineering mindset with operational excellence and are motivated by building reliable platforms that enable others to innovate.
In addition, you bring:
- Around 3 years or more of experience in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, Platform Engineering, or a similar role.
- Experience with public cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, containerized applications, and modern infrastructure tooling such as Terraform/OpenTofu, GitLab CI/CD, and ArgoCD.
- A solid software engineering background and experience with one or more programming or scripting languages, such as C#, Python, Go, or Bash.
- Experience with observability platforms such as Grafana, Datadog, or OpenTelemetry, and a solid understanding of reliability concepts such as SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets.
- An automation-first mindset with a passion for improving engineering workflows and reducing manual operational work.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate, coach, and influence teams in a multidisciplinary Agile environment.
- Experience with cloud security best practices and participating in an on-call rotation is considered an advantage.
Working at Lely means contributing to sustainable progress within one of the most innovative organizations in the Netherlands. You help make the agricultural sector more futureproof, and we ensure you have the space, resources, and support to do so.
- An international work environment that values collaboration, initiative, and diverse perspectives.
- A culture that encourages learning, experimentation, and ownership of ideas.
- Excellent employment conditions, including up to 8 weeks of vacation per year and a strong pension scheme.
- A Medior Salary range of €5,000 - €7,100 gross per month, with clear opportunities for growth within the scale.
- Full ownership of your own development, with access to a wide range of courses through the Lely Academy.
- Daily access to outstanding sports facilities at the Lely Campus: an indoor gym, outdoor padel courts, basketball and volleyball courts, table tennis, and table football. You can join Hyrox workouts or sign up for personal training and challenge your colleagues during an active break.
- Fresh coffee and tea from our own barista (with milk from our own farm) and a healthy, affordable company restaurant.
Work-life balance
- A healthy work-life balance thanks to our hybrid working policy: you work at least three days a week on Campus, with flexible hours and plenty of opportunity to spend additional time onsite (between 06:00 and 20:00).
- A free shuttle bus that takes you to and from the metro station in Maassluis, ensuring your workday starts and ends smoothly.
- And of course: we love to celebrate! Whether it’s an anniversary or the annual Christmas party. At Lely, we know how to do it.
We are also proud that our vision and efforts have been recognized with the Rotterdam Entrepreneurs Award 2025.
