Job description
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
- Under the direction of ED Medical Director, The Emergency Department (ED) Paramedic Program is designed so that the Licensed Paramedic functions as a team member in the Emergency Department, working with the ED physicians, nurses and technicians. While in the ED, the EMT-P is responsible to adhere to the hospital Standards of Patient Care and Policies/Procedures and function within his/her scope of practice as defined on application. Pre-hospital LA EMS protocols do not apply within the confines of the ED - physician orders are required prior to interventions. The Paramedic will also function as a member of the patient transfer team when acute inter-facility transfers are required.
SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Under medical direction of the ED physician, is responsible for following prescribed standing orders, performs a variety of invasive and non -invasive therapies including but not limited to evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation , drawing of blood samples for analysis, application of dressing and bandages, etc.
- Prepares concise and comprehensive written reports.
- Accurately documents all interventions and patient data in the Emergency Room record.
- Performs a variety of emergency medical treatment services at the basic and advanced life support levels at the direction of the Emergency Department physician.
- Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary work team.
- Performs delegated aspects of age-appropriate patient care under the direction of the physician.
- Reinforces patient/family teaching provided by the RN and documents appropriately.
- Communicates appropriately with patients, visitors, and staff, in a timely and efficient manner.
- Performs assigned tasks in an effective and timely manner.
- Communicates abnormal variances of date (vital signs, pain, labs etc) to appropriate staff.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
- Must have and maintain current state emergency medical technician and/or EMT-Paramedic License.
- Current certification/licensure as a Paramedic.
- 5 years field experience.
- BCLS, ACLS, PALS
- Must be able to handle a significant number of stressful situations and be able to function calmly.
- Works smoothly and professionally within an environment where teamwork is essential.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Work requires a variety of physical activities including sitting, standing and walking.
- Bending, stooping, and lifting are minimal.
- The work environment may be physically confining.
- Visual acuity required for a variety of activities.
