Overview

Under the direction of the Program Manager and Flight Surgeon/Medical Director, the Flight Nurse is responsible for responding to assigned calls in a safe, timely, and efficient manner while providing exceptional patient care and maintaining a hazard-free environment.

The Flight Nurse plays a key role in patient care by performing assessments, providing treatment, assisting with patient packaging, and facilitating safe transport. This position collaborates with internal teams throughout the facility and works closely with patients, families, first response agencies, healthcare providers, physicians, and hospital personnel.

As a member of an academic flight program, the Flight Nurse actively participates in outreach and education initiatives, including providing education to EMS partners and supporting performance improvement and resource development efforts for Trauma Service Area agencies.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • New hires effective June 14, 2017 , must obtain a BSN degree from an accredited school of nursing within three (3) years of hire or transfer into the position
  • New hires or transfers between August 1, 2013 – June 13, 2017 must follow the requirements outlined in their offer letter and signed job description
  • Employees hired or transferred prior to August 1, 2013 are grandfathered into the position requirements

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Active RN license to practice nursing in the State of Florida
  • Florida Paramedic License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Must have one of the following professional certifications at the time of hire or transfer:
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN)
  • Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN)
  • Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN)
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN)

Required Within 6 Months of Hire or Transfer

  • Advanced Trauma Care Nurse (ATCN) certification or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • FEMA ICS 100 certification
  • FEMA ICS 200 certification
  • Air Medical Crew Curriculum certification in accordance with Florida Administrative Code

Preferred Licensure/Certifications

  • National Registry Paramedic certification
  • Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) certification
  • CCRN or CEN certification
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
  • Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC)
  • Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of Critical Care, Trauma, or Emergency Department (ED) experience

Preferred Experience

  • Prehospital patient care experience

Necessary Skills

  • Demonstrates teamwork and communicates professionally with all members of the healthcare team
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn and apply computer technologies and procedures that impact patient care delivery
