Job description
We are working closely with local authority in Newport to assist with the appointment of a Gardener , on a 2.5-months contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.
Rate of Pay : £13.26- £17.10 per hour
Summary
The Gardener (Grade 4) is responsible for delivering high-quality horticultural and grounds maintenance services across cemeteries, memorial gardens, and other bereavement and environmental sites managed by Newport City Council. Working under the direction of a Team Leader, Supervisor, or Grounds Manager, the postholder carries out a wide range of practical horticultural tasks to maintain safe, attractive, and well-presented outdoor spaces that meet service standards and customer expectations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain cemeteries, memorial gardens, parks, and landscaped areas through routine horticultural operations.
- Undertake grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, pruning, leaf clearance, litter removal, and general site maintenance.
- Apply pesticides, herbicides, and other horticultural chemicals safely and in accordance with relevant legislation and certification requirements.
- Ensure all work is completed in compliance with health and safety legislation, council policies, and safe working practices.
- Complete records and communicate effectively with supervisors regarding completed work, maintenance issues, and equipment defects.
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture (or equivalent), or a minimum of two years' proven practical experience in grounds maintenance or horticulture.
Essentials
- Full, current UK driving licence.
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements relating to horticultural and grounds maintenance work.
- Experience carrying out grass cutting, hedge trimming, pruning, planting, weeding, and general grounds maintenance duties.
- Experience operating horticultural machinery, including pedestrian mowers, ride-on mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, and other powered equipment.
- Experience working safely in accordance with health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
