JOB TITLE: Staff Accountant I
DEPARTMENT: Finance Department
CLASS: Regular Full-Time / Exempt
SALARY: D.O.E.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, is responsible to plan and perform work of considerable complexity within the Finance department. Helps supervise staff and works closely with and under supervision of the CFO and the Treasure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Regular attendance is essential.
- Complete monthly financial reporting for various State & Federal assistance grants.
- Reviews monthly detailed financial statements for accuracy.
- Reviews actual versus budgeted expenditures to ensure compliance.
- Prepare and/or post journal entries.
- Encode cash receipts and prepare receipts in the absence of the Accounting clerk.
- Bank deposit preparation and reconciliation.
- Work with Program Managers regarding budget concerns and minor grant issues.
- Establish and assign account code numbers for new and existing budgets into the system.
- Calculate and reconcile travel authorization and claims.
- Maintain and update Grants and Contracts file system.
- Bank account reconciliation knowledge.
- Accounts Payable knowledge.
- Payroll knowledge.
- Accounts Receivable knowledge.
- Supervision of two to four staff.
- Other duties as assigned or as specified by the Finance Director.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have 5 years of progressively responsible experience in varied phases of Accounting.
- Preferred to have an AA degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration field.
- Minimum 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
- A combination of education, training or experience that demonstrates the potential ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Basic knowledge of accounting procedures;
- Strong communication skills required;
- Must have decision-making ability and analytical skills.
- Able to work efficiently as a member of a group/team; strong interpersonal skills, able to relate well with others.
- Able to plan, organize, and direct the work of several separate operating units engaged in a variety of financial and related activities.
- Ability to prepare, interpret, and analyze highly complex financial records and reports.
- Ability to be bonded.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Must pass a background check as a condition for continued employment;
- Must be able to operate a computer, fax machine, a copy machine and other office machines as required;
- Experience using Microsoft GP or another accounting software system preferred.
