Principal Software Engineer
About the Role Cloud Infrastructure Engineers at Mastercard design, build, and operate the foundational platforms that enable our product and service teams to deliver securely, reliably, and at scale. This role focuses on Azure-based infrastructure, cloud-native services, and automation that power transaction processing, analytics, developer productivity, and self-service delivery across the enterprise. As a Principal Software Engineer, you serve as a deeply experienced technical leader and organizational thought partner, operating with enterprise-wide scope and influence. You are accountable for shaping long-term platform strategy, driving architectural excellence across multiple domains, and ensuring alignment between cloud infrastructure investments and Mastercard’s business and technology priorities. You will lead the evolution of critical platform capabilities, establish durable engineering standards, and proactively identify opportunities to modernize, simplify, and scale our cloud ecosystem. While remaining hands-on where it matters most, your primary impact is through technical vision, decision-making, and the amplification of other engineers and teams.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you are expected to
Set and drive long-term technical vision and strategy for cloud infrastructure and platform engineering across multiple domains Serve as the architectural authority for Azure-based infrastructure, ensuring consistency, scalability, and alignment with enterprise standards Lead the design of highly complex, business-critical platform systems, making and guiding key architectural tradeoffs Establish and enforce enterprise-wide patterns, standards, and guardrails for secure, resilient, and cost-efficient cloud solutions Influence and align senior engineering, product, and architecture leaders on multi-year platform direction and investment priorities Identify and mitigate systemic and emerging risks across reliability, security, scalability, and financial efficiency Drive platform simplification and modernization efforts, reducing duplication and technical fragmentation across teams Champion self-service platform capabilities and developer experience improvements at enterprise scale Lead and facilitate cross-organizational design reviews, elevating engineering quality and consistency Mentor and develop senior engineers and technical leaders, raising the bar for engineering excellence across the organization Act as a trusted advisor to leadership, translating business strategy into durable, scalable platform solutions Stay ahead of industry trends, bringing forward new ideas and capabilities that meaningfully advance Mastercard’s cloud ecosystem
All About You It is expected that a candidate has experience across multiple areas listed below:
Deep, enterprise-scale experience designing and operating Azure-based cloud platforms, spanning compute, networking, storage, identity, and managed services Recognized expertise in Infrastructure-as-Code and automation at scale, with strong focus on composability, governance, and policy-driven engineering Advanced understanding of cloud security architecture, including zero-trust design, identity federation, secure network boundaries, and regulatory considerations Proven track record of architecting and evolving highly resilient, globally distributed systems, with strong command of failure domains and recovery strategies Demonstrated ability to define and execute multi-team, multi-phase technical strategies, including dependency management and incremental delivery models Strong bias toward operational excellence, ensuring observability, reliability engineering practices, and cost transparency are foundational elements of all solutions Exceptional problem-solving and systems-thinking skills, with the ability to diagnose complex, cross-domain issues and drive resolution Extensive experience with enterprise CI/CD, SDLC governance, and platform engineering practices at scale Highly effective communicator capable of influencing executive stakeholders and driving alignment across large, distributed organizations Consistent track record of developing senior talent and shaping engineering culture, beyond direct reporting lines Pragmatic leader who can balance strategic vision with execution, navigating organizational and technical tradeoffs effectively Active contributor to industry and internal communities, with a strong pulse on emerging trends in cloud, DevOps, and platform engineering
