Job description

We have an opening for a Psychologist to provide a broad range of counseling services for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) 9,000+ employees and their family members. This role works within Laboratory policies and Department of Energy (DOE) requirements, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.  You will assess and provide consultation and/or referrals to leaders and occupational health staff on personal behavioral health, human reliability, and work-related psychological issues; with the goal of minimizing work-site impact and maintaining continuity and quality of care for the clients.  You will provide crisis intervention, case management and critical incident stress debriefings.  Additionally, you will be responsible for conducting psychological evaluations and assessment for employees that are in safety and security sensitive positions.

This position is in the Health Services Department’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP), within the O&B Directorate. You will be working within a hybrid of telehealth and on-site services weekly.  LLNL’s Health Services Department’s structure is a multidisciplinary private clinical practice that consists of: Occupational Health Physicians, Occupational Nurses, Health and Wellness Coordinators and Psychologists.

This position is well suited for Psychologist who would like to expand their skills in return-to-work program, fitness for duty evaluations, disability management, crisis response, as well as drug free workforce assessment/case management.  Additionally, this role will provide outreach, presentations, and an opportunity for specialized workplace groups.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. 

You will

  • Perform individual, marital, and family counseling on issues including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, family problems and work-related concerns.
  • Provide employee assistance services to Laboratory employees and management while facilitating appropriate interventions to determine appropriate mental health treatments.
  • Perform mental health assessments and structured interviews, including the ability to interpret the Minnesota Multiphasic Inventory 3 (MMPI-3) and the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). Perform psychological evaluations for employees with HRP/SAHRP/NFCP/FSCRP/SPO certifications.
  • Consult with other occupational health professionals on behavioral health aspects of occupational and non-occupational injury cases.
  • Provide crisis intervention/critical incident stress management consultation to groups.  Develop initiatives/programming based on psychological trends, including presentations, articles, groups, and outreach.
  • Provide services remotely via telehealth protocols.
  • Perform duties consistent with the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethical Guidelines, or other professional guidelines and Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA) standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Doctorate in Psychology and experience working as a counselor.
  • Current license as a Psychologist (e.g., PsyD, PhD) or ability to obtain and sustain a California license as a Psychologist.
  • Substantial experience with MMPI and PAI interpretation and psychological assessment.
  • Substantial experience assessing and addressing personal and work-related challenges, substance misuse and abuse issues, career and life transitions, marital, family and personal stress and the emotional impact of illness focusing on health and productivity management.
  • Substantial training and experience in mental health, substance abuse/chemical dependency counseling, clinical assessment, and organizational issues.
  • Experience assessing workplace threats and providing critical incident stress debriefings.
  • Expert verbal and written communications skills are necessary to effectively present, explain and communicate information to all levels of personnel and management.
  • Highly advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate and recommend actions and solutions to patients.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with drug-free workplace programs and DOT regulated programs.
  • Experience with US DOE and/or high security clearance issues as well as Department of Energy Designated Psychologist.
  • Experience performing complex and comprehensive psychological assessment and evaluation, including fitness for duty and return to work assessments.

Pay Range

$185,850 - $235,692 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary range in good faith we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.  If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).
