Senior Building Mechanical Engineer (water/wastewater)

This Senior Building Mechanical Engineer position will work with senior technical staff on various building mechanical projects, primarily in the water and wastewater industry. The Building Mechanical Engineering role is responsible for leading the design and implementation of HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems for high-profile building projects. The role interprets mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes, as well as relevant fire protection and life-safety standards (including, but not limited to, those of the CSA and NFPA) relevant to commercial buildings and wastewater treatment facilities. The role includes sizing ductwork, plumbing, and fire suppression systems, selecting suitable equipment, and drafting and modeling these systems using AutoCAD and Revit software. The role also develops specifications in Word and Speclink, and reviews drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy. This role requires strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and a willingness to mentor other engineers and designers.
Hybrid or fully remote work from British Columbia, Canada is allowed but candidates may be asked to travel to client worksites a couple times per quarter.
Responsibilities
- Develop HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler calculations that support building design and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Interpret mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes to provide guidance in design implementation and ensure alignment with code requirements.
- Interpret fire protection and life-safety standards, including hazardous area classification and ventilation, for design and compliance with standards the CSA, NFPA (e.g., NFPA 820 for wastewater facilities) and relevant environmental or industrial regulations within a wastewater context.
- Develop and implement solutions for hazardous area ventilation, odor control, and explosion prevention in highly corrosive or combustible environments typical of wastewater treatment.
- Use software to draft and model HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems, and develop specifications for HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler equipment.
- Interpret relevant codes and standards for fire sprinkler system design and compliance.
- Review HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler drawings/specifications, coordinating with other engineering disciplines to ensure integration and compliance.
- Size ductwork, plumbing, and fire sprinkler distribution systems using industry-standard techniques and models.
- Lead large projects with limited oversight and contribute to projects of strategic importance.
- Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Mentorship
- Provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
Skills and Competencies
- Proven knowledge of fire protection and life-safety standards, building codes and mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes.
- Extremely proficient in relevant software for drafting, modeling, and specification development.
- Demonstrated ability in developing, drafting, and modeling HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems.
- Excellent problem-solving skills for handling routine tasks.
- Advanced ability to review and coordinate HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler drawings/specifications with other engineering disciplines.
- Exceptional ability to work independently and provide guidance to less experienced colleagues.
- Excellent leadership skills demonstrated through leading significant projects or initiatives.
Experience
- Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of building mechanical engineering or related experience.
- Typically will become certified in BC's Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) Framework and progress through the SMS competencies.
Preferred Experience
- 15+ years of building mechanical engineering or related experience.
- Prior experience in municipal discipline engineering designs and consulting within the water and wastewater industry.
- Knowledge of piping and ductwork layout and design of 3D piping systems.
- Ability to work with Designers/Drafters in Revit/BIM environment.
- Experience in HVAC and plumbing piping design.
- Knowledge of NFPA 820 and other NFPA codes for extreme environments.
- Experience using engineering calculation software (MathCAD, Excel, AFT Arrow/Fathom).
- Experience with Microstation and Bentley products.
- Proficient using CAD software (Revit and AutoCad).
Education
- A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering is required.
- Professionally licensed (P. Eng.) and, if necessary, expected to achieve license in British Columbia within 6 months of hire.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Canada: $118,000 - $161,000
