Description

Build a career with impact. Working at the World Bank Group (WBG) provides a unique opportunity to help countries solve their greatest development challenges. As one of the largest sources of funding and knowledge for developing countries, the WBG is a unique partnership of five global institutions dedicated to ending poverty, increasing shared prosperity, and promoting sustainable development. With 189 member countries and more than 120 offices worldwide, the WBG works with public and private sector partners, investing in groundbreaking projects and using data, research, and technology to develop solutions to the most urgent global challenges.

Background & General Description: The Africa Gender Innovation Lab, which sits within the People Vertical of the World Bank's AFE and AFW regions, conducts impact evaluations and other rigorous research in Sub-Saharan Africa to generate evidence on how to close gender gaps in earnings, productivity, assets, and agency. With this evidence, the Africa GIL aims to support the design of innovative, scalable interventions to address gender inequality in the productive economic sectors across Africa. The impact objective of the Africa GIL is to increase take-up of effective policies by governments, development organizations, and the private sector to address the underlying causes of gender inequality in Africa, and through that, promote growth.

VPU Context: The Africa Gender Innovation Lab spans two regional units in the People Vertical, one in AFE and one in AFW, both working to increase take-up of effective policies that can address the underlying causes of gender inequality in Africa, particularly in terms of women's economic and social empowerment, and through that promote growth.

Unit Context: The Africa Gender Innovation Lab has a clear and actionable impact objective: to increase take-up of effective policies that can address the underlying causes of gender inequality in Africa, particularly in terms of women's economic and social empowerment, and through that promote growth. The AFW GIL carries this work forward in the AFW region, within the People Vertical. It aims to do this by strengthening knowledge, in particular, by producing and delivering a new body of evidence and developing a compelling narrative, geared towards policymakers, on what works and what does not work in promoting gender equality. The ETC will work within AFW and will provide research analyst level support.

Duties and accountabilities

  • Provide technical and analytical support to ongoing AFW GIL impact evaluations, including survey preparation, data collection oversight, data management, and econometric analysis across baseline, midline, and endline surveys.
  • Conduct statistical analysis to assess program impacts, including subgroup analysis, robustness checks, and corrections related to multiple testing and attrition, as appropriate for AFW GIL
  • Inspect, clean, merge, and document large scale household, community, and administrative datasets, ensuring data quality and internal validity.
  • Contribute to the preparation of AFW GIL technical outputs, including working papers, policy notes, and blog posts, through the production of analytical tables, figures, and written inputs.
  • Support the dissemination of AFW GIL results to internal and external stakeholders, including government counterparts, operational teams, donors, and partners.
  • Prepare AFW GIL reproducibility materials, including cleaned datasets, code, and documentation, to ensure transparency and replicability of results.
