Job description

Reports to: Director of Nursing, Andrews Senior Care

Location: Charlottetown, PEI

Hours of Work: Full-time, salaried

Portfolio: Established 80-bed Community Care operation plus primary leadership of the new 90-bed Long Term Care expansion opening January 2027

Are We The Right Fit For You?

Are you passionate about working with seniors?

Do you enjoy making a difference in people’s lives?

Do you get excited about being part of a team that believes in lifelong learning and continuous improvement?

We certainly do.

We believe that work should be a place where you can have fun while doing something meaningful.

We’re currently looking for like-minded team members to join our movement, which is to provide the very best care and hospitality to our residents and their families.

We’ve been redefining ourselves and working towards this ideal for over 40 years. And, as times change, we change with them. We don’t claim to be perfect, but we do want to be the best place to work in Prince Edward Island. We try very hard to be there for our residents when they need us and to guide them through the changes in their lives.

But we can’t do it alone. As healthcare becomes more complex, we continually need new ideas and expertise to best serve our residents.

If this sounds like you, you may be a great fit for our team!

Why Join Us?

Everything we do is guided by three simple ideas: Care, Team Work, and Experience. We treat every resident and team member as an individual, we succeed by supporting one another, and we believe some of the best moments happen when we create them together.

Andrews Senior Care homes are proud to be the first and only privately owned Long Term Care homes in PEI to achieve Accreditation with Commendation from Accreditation Canada, and we consistently perform well in provincial inspections. We don't do this by standing still — we're a proactive, progressive organization that is always looking at how to do things better, whether that's how we deliver care, how we support our teams, or how we grow.

Taking care of those that provide care is important to us. As part of our benefits package, we provide annual fitness membership subsidy and access to mental health support and other counselling, should you ever need it.

We want you to be supported during your entire time with us and beyond, so we provide a competitive benefits package including health, dental and life insurance, drug coverage, and a pension plan that matches up to 4% of your contributions.

We also believe work should be fun. Our teams take part in regular team activities, an annual Team Appreciation Week, Family Day celebrations, a Christmas party, and more, all year round. We work hard, and we play harder. If you believe in working hard while helping your team grow into leaders, this is the role for you.

How You’ll Spend Your Time…

Andrews Senior Care is preparing to open one of the most significant expansion: a new 90-bed Long Term Care home in Charlottetown, targeted to welcome its first residents in January 2027. We are looking for a Director of Care who wants to build something from the ground up — creating a new team, implementing new systems, and shaping a culture of care, while carrying forward the standards that have made Andrews a leader in Prince Edward Island.

This role is intentionally weighted toward the expansion. Our existing 80-bed Community Care operation is in excellent hands: it has been led independently and successfully for the past five years by our current Community Care Manager, who will report into this position. You will provide leadership, support, and strategic oversight to that team, but it will require the lighter touch — your time, energy, and focus are needed on getting the new 90-bed home built, staffed, licensed, and ready to receive residents.

This is a role for someone who is energized by a deadline, comfortable building a team and a home from scratch, and who never loses sight of the fact that every decision — staffing, budget, process — ultimately serves resident care and quality of life.

In addition to what makes you unique, there are a few basics that we require for this role:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Registered Nurses of Prince Edward Island
  • Significant experience managing Long Term Care operation, ideally at a Director of Care or senior clinical leadership level.
  • Experience leading the opening of a new care home or care unit is a strong asset.
  • A track record of hiring and building teams, with a genuine interest in developing people into future leaders
  • A solid grasp of the operational and business side of running a care home — you understand that efficient, well-managed operations and excellent resident care go hand in hand, not in competition.
  • Strategic and administratively strong, with the organization and follow-through to manage a multi-year project against firm deadlines
  • A strong sense of ownership and a problem-solver's mindset — comfortable making decisions and driving them to results
  • Thrives under pressure and deadlines without losing sight of resident and team wellbeing

Your Role In Helping Residents

While we all collaborate to provide care and hospitality to our residents, we all play different roles to make this happen. You’ll contribute by:

(a) Expansion Leadership (Primary Focus)

  • Lead the build-out of the care team for the new 90-bed home — interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and developing RNs, LPNs, and Caregivers ahead of opening.
  • Set the operational and clinical foundation for the new home: staffing models, scheduling structures, care documentation systems, and workflows built to scale
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and care standards required to meet government legislation, Accreditation Canada standards, and Andrews' own quality benchmarks from day one
  • Develop and execute the opening readiness plan, ensuring all operational, clinical, regulatory, licensing, and staffing milestones are achieved in advance of the home's opening.
  • Partner with Senior Management, People and Culture, and the Director of Real Estate on the practical realities of opening a new home — space planning, equipment, and operational logistics
  • Build a team culture from the ground up that reflects Andrews' core values and sets new hires up to succeed long after opening day Community Care Oversight
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to the Community Care Manager, who will continue to run day-to-day operations of the 80-bed Community Care program
  • Stay informed on quality, compliance, and performance within Community Care, stepping in where support or strategic decisions are needed
  • Ensure consistency of standards and culture across both the established Community Care operation and the new expansion

(b) Care Quality, Compliance & Operations

  • Lead quality improvement and risk management initiatives across the portfolio, in collaboration with the Director of Nursing
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments to maintain safe, high-quality environments for residents and team members
  • Lead preparation for annual and impromptu inspections by the Department of Health and Wellness, and support ongoing Accreditation Canada readiness
  • Bring a working understanding of the business side of care — budgets, staffing efficiency, and cost management — balancing sound operational decision-making with uncompromising care quality
  • Investigate and resolve resident and family concerns or safety incidents promptly and effectively
  • Complete and communicate required reports (care hours, monthly reporting, etc.) and represent the home in leadership and Senior Management meetings

The Support Behind You

Opening a new home is a significant undertaking, but you won't be doing it alone. You'll be supported by experienced leaders and dedicated teams who are committed to helping you succeed.

  • A network of experienced Directors of Care who understand the challenges of leading a home and are committed to supporting one another through shared knowledge and experience.
  • A dedicated in-house Trainer who delivers skills-based education and ongoing learning opportunities for Caregivers, LPNs, and RNs, so you can focus on leading your team.
  • Strategic guidance and direction from the Director of Nursing and Group General Manager, providing leadership and support across Andrews Senior Care.
  • A proactive Recruitment Team focused on helping you attract and hire the right people for your growing team.
  • Experienced Maintenance and Real Estate teams who support construction, facility readiness, and the many practical details involved in opening a new home.
