Field Geotechnical Technician
Job description
Position Summary
The Civil Technologist, Geotechnical Materials Testing plays a key role in supporting construction and geotechnical projects through field testing, inspection, and reporting activities. This position is responsible for conducting materials testing on construction sites, including compaction testing, asphalt and concrete sampling, and pile monitoring. The role requires a strong commitment to safety, technical accuracy, and effective communication with project teams to ensure quality standards and project requirements are met.
Key Responsibilities
Field Testing & Inspection
- Perform materials testing on construction sites, including:
- Soil compaction testing
- Asphalt sampling and testing
- Concrete sampling and testing
- Pile monitoring and inspection
- Conduct field inspections in accordance with applicable project specifications and industry standards.
- Ensure all testing and inspection activities are completed accurately and efficiently.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare and submit daily compaction reports.
- Complete field safety reports and related project documentation.
- Maintain accurate testing records and field notes.
- Communicate field observations, results, and concerns to the engineering team in a timely manner.
Equipment Management
- Operate a nuclear densometer safely and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain, inspect, and calibrate testing equipment.
- Ensure all testing equipment remains in good working condition and meets applicable standards.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with engineers, project managers, contractors, and clients on field-related matters.
- Provide clear verbal and written communication regarding testing results, site conditions, and project requirements.
- Support project teams in delivering high-quality services to clients.
Continuous Improvement & Safety
- Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve field processes and workflows.
- Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Geotechnical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
Experience
- Experience conducting construction materials testing and inspections.
- Experience operating a nuclear densometer and completion of all associated safety training.
- Familiarity with testing and inspection procedures, including:
- CCIL
- ASTM
- CSA
- Experience working in the Calgary market is considered an asset.
- Preference will be given to CCIL-certified technicians with relevant field experience.
Certifications & Licences
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- TDG Class 7 certification.
- Nuclear densometer certification and associated safety training.

- Strong understanding of construction materials testing and inspection practices.
- Ability to interpret and follow testing standards, procedures, and specifications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

- Sound judgment and a strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Flexible schedule and willingness to travel as required.
