Job description

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join Stevenage Healthcare, working primarily from King George Surgery, Stevenage, as part of the Stevenage South Primary Care Network (SSPCN). This role is offered on a part-time basis for 30 hours per week working across 4 days.

This is a practice-based role where you will become an integral member of the wider multidisciplinary team, supporting clinicians and patients to ensure the safe, effective and cost-efficient use of medicines. You will work closely with GPs, Clinical Pharmacists, nursing teams, community pharmacies and secondary care colleagues to improve medicines optimisation and enhance patient outcomes.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting prescribing processes, medication safety initiatives, medicines reconciliation, repeat prescribing systems and responding to medication-related queries. You will also contribute to quality improvement projects, clinical audits and the development of robust prescribing procedures that support best practice and regulatory requirements.

Whilst the role is primarily based at King George Surgery, there may be occasional requirements to support wider PCN initiatives and services across Stevenage South Primary Care Network.

As a Pharmacy Technician, you will support the delivery of high-quality medicines management services and work collaboratively with the practice and pharmacy teams to ensure patients receive safe and effective care.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Managing medication queries from patients, GPs and other healthcare professionals.
  • Supporting medicines optimisation activities across the practice.
  • Processing and supporting repeat prescribing systems, including Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD).
  • Undertaking medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge and outpatient appointments.
  • Supporting medication reviews and high-risk medication monitoring programmes.
  • Assisting with medicines safety initiatives, including MHRA and National Patient Safety Alerts.
  • Helping to identify and reduce medicines waste whilst promoting cost-effective prescribing.
  • Supporting prescribing audits, quality improvement projects and CQC compliance activities.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring prescribing-related documentation is updated appropriately.
  • Developing effective working relationships with community pharmacies, hospital pharmacy teams and other healthcare providers to improve continuity of care.
  • Assisting with the development and review of prescribing protocols, policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Supporting clinicians and practice staff with medicines-related advice within your scope of practice.

About the Candidate

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, organised and committed to delivering excellent patient care through safe and effective medicines management.

Essential requirements

  • Current GPhC registration as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent recognised qualification).
  • Strong understanding of medicines management and prescribing processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work independently.
  • Good IT skills and confidence using clinical systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and learning.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a GP practice, Primary Care Network or other primary care setting.
  • Experience using SystmOne or other GP clinical systems.
  • Completion of, or willingness to undertake, the Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway (PCPEP).
  • Experience supporting medicines optimisation, prescribing audits or quality improvement initiatives.
