Position Highlights

The University of Arizona's Department of Educational Policy Studies & Practice (EPSP) within the College of Education invites you to apply to the role of Program Coordinator, Native SOAR. The University of Arizona College of Education's Native Student Outreach Access, and Resiliency (SOAR) is a high impact community-engaged course and intergenerational mentoring program. The Native SOAR program coordinator provides support for 1) student-led programming, 2) campus visits for K-12 students and program partners, and 3) catering for campus tours and activities.

The University of Arizona, located on the ancestral homelands of the Tohono O’odham Nation (TON) and situated near both the TON and Pascua Yaqui Tribe, is committed to building reciprocal partnerships with Tribal Nations across Arizona and the Southwest. Guided by its land-grant mission, UA collaborates with Tribal communities to co-create knowledge, expand educational opportunity, and address community-identified priorities that benefit both Tribal Nations and the broader public.

Native SOAR is a key example of this commitment. Developed in response to Tribal priorities to increase Native student access, persistence, and completion in higher education, Native SOAR also advances UA’s goal of expanding postsecondary opportunity across Arizona.

Native SOAR includes two complementary components: an academic credit-bearing undergraduate course in which approximately 70 UA students (annually), representing a wide range of academic disciplines, develop knowledge and skills related to college access, student success, educational equity, mentorship, and working effectively with Native communities. Building on this foundation, the near-peer mentoring program in which UA undergraduates apply their learning by mentoring Native American high school students from Tucson and surrounding communities. Mentors support college exploration, academic preparation, and navigation of admissions and financial aid, while helping students build confidence in their postsecondary goals. The model fosters strong relationships that benefit both mentors and mentees.

Coordinates and manages the Native SOAR mentorship program by doing the following:

  • Supervising Native SOAR mentors during campus visits, which include class time programming and activities before and after class.
  • Assisting in the training of Native SOAR mentors in the course and in weekly mentoring campus visits.
  • Overseeing new student recruitment for the community-engagement course and mentoring program by visiting schools and classrooms; attending community events; and delivering information workshops.

Coordinates Native SOAR programming by

  • Creating, organizing, and maintaining program documentation, including the reconciliation of programming costs.
  • Effectively planning, implementing, and evaluating student-led events and presentations.
  • Performing background research or evaluations to identify appropriate programs and recommend changes in practices as needed.
  • Collecting data/information to assist in identifying needs for additional programs or services.

Working closely with various stakeholders to promote programs by:

  • Planning and collaborating with community and school partners, such as advisors, counselors, and administrators.
  • Develops and carries out activities with a focus on increasing college-going values.
  • Creating and distributing program marketing materials to appropriate audiences.
  • Collaborating with campus/community partners to provide programming.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills (time management, communication, discretion, attention to detail).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point), e-mail, survey tools (e.g., Google Forms, Qualtrics), and the Internet.
  • Ability to interact effectively across varied teams, partners, and experiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to effectively manage competing job responsibilities.
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships with student and departmental groups through attending meetings, events, or completing necessary outreach.
  • Skill in building relationships with educators, professionals, students, and families.
  • Skill for helping students in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide student-centered service by maintaining high standards of customer support and responding effectively to students' varied needs and circumstances.
  • Ability to follow laws and guiding principles of recruitment work, including FERPA regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Employees are required to have the ability to lift, move, and transport up to 20 lbs frequently.
  • Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
