Dispatcher (Transport)
Job description
JOB PURPOSE
The Dispatcher plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient and compliant operation of the company’s fleet. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and monitoring the movement of trucks and drivers to maximize resource utilization while adhering to regulatory requirements on driver rest periods and fleet maintenance schedules. The Dispatcher acts as the central communication hub between drivers, customers, and internal teams.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fleet & Driver Planning
- Develop and maintain daily and weekly dispatch schedules to optimize fleet and driver utilization.
- Assign drivers and vehicles to routes based on availability, skill, and compliance with rest-hour regulations.
- Monitor vehicle maintenance schedules to ensure safe and legal operations.
- Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all dispatch activities comply with transportation regulations, including driver hours-of-service rules.
- Track and document driver logs, rest periods, and vehicle inspections.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to schedule downtime for repairs and preventive servicing.
- Operational Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Site Leaders, providing route instructions, updates, and support.
- Respond to unexpected events (e.g., breakdowns, traffic delays) with contingency planning.
- Performance Monitoring
- Track fleet performance metrics such as utilization rates, on-time delivery, and fuel efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to improve resource allocation and reduce operational costs.
- Prepare reports for management on dispatch efficiency and compliance.
QUALIFICATION
- Proven experience as a Dispatcher in trucking or logistics operations.
- Strong knowledge of transportation regulations, especially driver hours-of-service rules.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
- Proficiency in dispatch software and GPS tracking systems.
- Effective communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure.
