Position Summary

The Digital Accessibility Engineering team at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is seeking Extra Help Information Technology Technical Associates (AI Enablement Engineers) to advance open-source accessibility solutions and enhance AI-assisted workflows across the team. This role focuses on the continued development and optimization of Equalify Reflow, an open-source tool designed to convert PDFs into accessible formats. In addition to contributing to Reflow, AI Enablement Engineers will support and maintain other open-source initiatives, while providing training and guidance to improve the team's adoption and effective use of AI-driven tools and processes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Equalify Reflow, working toward the goal of processing 200,000 UIC PDFs with under 20% failure rate
  • Contribute to the maintenance of Open Source projects supported by the Digital Accessibility Engineering team
  • Provide training and support to Digital Accessibility team members adopting AI assisted operations
  • Document workflows, decisions, and findings so the Open Source community can build on your work
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to process improvement efforts.
  • Perform other related duties to support the mission and goals of UIC’s digital accessibility services and initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
  • College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
  • Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
  • Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining Open Source software
  • Working knowledge of AI tooling, including large language models and agentic workflows
  • Strong written communication skills for asynchronous collaboration
  • Ability to work independently toward clear, measurable goals
