Position Summary
The Extra Help Information Technology Technical Associate (Front-End Web Designer & Developer) , under general guidance from the Creative and Digital Services Creative Director, is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing a division-wide web communications strategy that supports the objectives of all departments/units within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. This individual provides guidance and oversight to web staff across the division to ensure website content is high-quality, consistent with branding, impactful, and relevant. They also stay abreast of trends in web and digital communications solutions to improve outcomes.
This employee serves as a strategic partner with UIC Strategic Marketing and Communications (SMC) on campus-wide digital and template initiatives to ensure alignment with university standards, while maintaining primary responsibility for operational execution, Student Affairs web implementation, and direct unit support.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops and oversees website management content and design guidelines for all websites across the Office of the Vice Chancellor For Student Affairs. Coordinates with an external consulting firm and with the UIC web content management systems team to optimize approaches, outcomes, and efficiency.
- Based on broad input, designs and manages improvements to the web content management system to improve the end-user experience and to improve the content manager's ability to update and repurpose content.
- Oversees the work of content managers and web staff across all units with the Office of the Vice Chancellor For Student Affairs. Provides web content management and website hosting technical support as needed.
- Collaborates closely with SaTech in order to closely align the sharing of data and content across the entirety of the Office of the Vice Chancellor For Student Affairs.
- Oversees day-to-day operations, maintenance, and content development on the website; coordinates technical development efforts in support of content and graphic requirements; interfaces with UIC and UI COM groups on marketing and information technology, along with outside vendors, to direct ongoing website development.
- Monitors, measures, and evaluates website effectiveness and makes recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of website pages and content in support of the Student Affairs mission to foster student success and affinity by creating experiences that engage students in programs and services that support their learning and personal development.
- Oversees governance structure and site access for content authors; oversees and provides quality control for site content across the Student Affairs division; assists with managing web staff across all areas of the Student Affairs to oversee content published.
- Ensures adherence to branding standards and guidelines across the Office of the Vice Chancellor For Student Affairs websites.
- Assist/Coordinates the production of artwork for websites.
- Assists with marketing-related web communications initiatives, such as Google Analytics and search engine optimization.
- Evaluates competitor websites to evaluate best practices and to adopt new concepts and procedures to make the Student Affairs websites more helpful and impactful in meeting the targeted audience needs of prospective and current students, prospective and current faculty, staff, prospective and current patients, alumni, donors, and news media.
- Manage day-to-day office operations. Interview, hire, orient, lead, mentor and evaluate staff to meet departmental and organizational needs.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
- College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
- Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with web design tools and processes. Knowledge of current and emerging digital marketing strategies.
- Experience in website overhauls and redesigns with strong project management and quality assurance experience.
— Web Technologies & Programming Languages: C++, C, Python, HTML, PHP, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript, WordPress, Webforms, Apache, Microsoft IIS, MS SQL Server Management Studio, Git, GitHub.
— UI/UX: Figma, Sketch, user research, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping, typography — Adobe Software: Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD
- Strong ability to develop new, relevant technology skills on an ongoing basis.
- Ability to engage with extensive content across the Student Affairs Division to ensure it meets organization-wide objectives and follows consistent branding and positioning for multiple audiences, including prospective and current students/trainees, prospective and current faculty, alumni community, donors and funders, prospective and current patients, and news media.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple, competing projects for a wide range of departments and campuses across the Student Affairs.
- Ability to manage and review the content development process and branding to ensure appropriate positioning to desired target audiences and constituents.
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to supervise, train, and coach student staff on a direct and indirect basis in order to deliver high-quality and timely work against organizational goals.
