Newmont’s Merian operation in Suriname is an open pit gold mine approximately 66km south of the town Moengo and 30 km north of the Nassau Mountains near the French Guiana. Your Impact
The Tailings and Water Treatment Superintendent will report to the Process Manager and is responsible for ensuring that the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) operation meets recognized international standards. The incumbent will fulfill all duties for the site as the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) and will have an accountability to the Senior Director Global Tailings Management. The role will liaise directly with the Process Operations Superintendent for daily tailings management activities including setting clear deposition plans, undertake regular facility inspections and ensure the tailings pipeline and associated pumping systems are maintained. Also, liaise closely with the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) to ensure that internal and external standards and guidelines pertaining to tailings storage facilities are met. The Tailings and Water Treatment Superintendent will lead the operation of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), Treated Water Storage Reservoir (TWSR), TSF Booster station and all ancillary systems including the TSF seepage bores and pumping systems. This position may be required to undertake alternate Process Operations Superintendent and Process Manager duties to cover rotational leave of these roles. The incumbent will be required to develop strong working relationships with the Mining and Environmental departments along with our Business Partners to ensure safe, compliant optimization of the TSF. The role requires high level planning and reporting abilities. There is a focus on safety and compliance to regulations, standards and Merian site-specific standards. A key aspect of the role is ensuring cost effective, fit for purpose solutions delivered on schedule, which are consistent with business plans and enhance Merian’s performance. Development and progression of our national team is a key responsibility of the role. Previous experience in training and nationalizing personnel in developing countries will be well regarded.

Reporting
Prepare monthly reports on tailings management. Knowledge of where the water flows at the site to ensure an adequate water supply to the process plant. Assist in the development and operation of the site water model. Assist with the preparation of capital and operating cost budgets for the Tailings Dams. Assist in preparing and reviewing expenditure requests (AFE’s) as required to fund expansion of the dam and pumping systems such that approvals received for expenditure are well ahead of the execution phase. In conjunction with Mining Geotechnical and Environmental Superintendents, conduct Weekly, Monthly and Quarterly TSF inspections. Report on non-compliance and report/lead corrective actions via Enablon Reporting System. Functional Planning/Scheduling
Review the TSF operations with Process Plant Superintendent or delegate. Set the deposition plan in accordance with Newmont Standards to maintain the decant pond and ensure correct rates of rise of the dam walls. On a required basis, co-ordinate Tailings Dam wall lifts with Site Personnel, Design Consultants and Business Partners. Assist in the development and review of the long-term TSF dam lift and operational strategy. Identify projects that have an impact on the long-term TSF and Water Systems operation and develop strategies to implement. Coordinate with TSF design consultants to model in advance of deposition and ensure planning of the TSF Dam lifts is ahead of deposition. Plan wall construction with the nominated consultant and manage construction of TSF Dam lifts to meet operational needs as defined by the long term TSF strategy.
Safety
Ensure that all Personnel (including contractors) who are required to work at the TSF maintain appropriate safety standards. Ensure that appropriate training programs are put in place for all personnel requiring access to or working at the TSF or on the water systems, and that training procedures and records are maintained up to date. Budget Assist in preparing sustaining capital budgets annually for the TSF and water systems. Provide feedback to the development of operating cost budgets for the processing and mining department’s Water and Tailings management systems.
Operational Participation
Routinely report on the status of Merian TSF. Assist in reviewing proposed rehabilitation plans with the Environmental Manager. Liaise with Merian water, tailings and geotechnical consultants to ensure that practical operating systems are implemented. Ensure key International Cyanide Code commitments and requirements are implemented and recorded to maintain certification for the site. Ensure dam construction is in line with Newmont Standards and operational needs.
Prerequisites for your success in this role
Preferred Tertiary Qualification - Civil Engineering, Geotechnical, Metallurgy, Mining or Chemical Engineering.
Experience
10+ years’ experience in Management & Operation of Large Tailings disposal facilities, Water treatment plants and/or Mineral Processing Plants. Previous experience in developing countries. Demonstrated skills and ability leading a multicultural and multidisciplinary groups with varying skillsets in a complex process plant. Familiarity with and understanding water supply and distribution management practices, ground water supply and water pumping. Strong knowledge of hydrogeology and geo-technics. Knowledge and understanding of regulations applicable to management of tailings facilities, fresh water extraction, and mine site operations. Shown experience achieving production and construction schedules in tailings storage facilities, industrial processing operations, or chemical operations, and/or equivalent. Strong technical and analytical skills centered around planning, cost control, monitoring, instrumentation, QA/QC, and reporting. Shown experience training and developing others.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills. Above average communication skills, able to speak, read, and write in English. Ability to prioritize work load and handle multiple priorities at once. Able to change focus and priorities as required. Strong PC skills using MS office software.
Your work environment
This position is located at Merian, at the project sites. Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment The Merian mine is located in Northeastern Suriname, approximately 98 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Paramaribo and 60 kilometers south of Moengo. Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace under rotational roster (6 weeks on site and 3 weeks off) with additional work time as required to meet operational commitments. Suriname has a tropical climate with dry and two rainy seasons with anticipated tropical rainfall of 1.5m to 2.5m of rain per year.
