Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Purpose

The Environmental Technician will be responsible for accurate and timely execution of environmental field services activities, including waste management (receiving, handling, processing, and shipment), concurrent reclamation (tree planting, erosion and sediment control ( placing coconut mats and hydro seeding), monitoring and sampling (surface water, groundwater, sewage, soil, air) activities, Nursery operation, Compost Facility operations, vegetation disturbance permitting survey and relocation of lowmobile wildlife.

Essential Duties

Observe, Identify and report safety issues/ risks in the field and conduct:

  • Housekeeping of work areas – all items to be placed neat and correctly,
  • Housekeeping of Sampling points: vegetation maintenance with brush cutter
  • Housekeeping of vehicles
  • Assist with fallen tree removal from access roads using a chainsaw
  • Participate in completing Job Hazard assessments (JHA, CCV).

Monitoring: Assist with tasks associated with sampling of

  • Air quality - samples (PM10, TSP),
  • Soil sampling,
  • Water sampling (surface, ground, sewage)
  • Collection, reporting of field sampling data using associated monitoring equipment (Multi meter, turbidity meter, Minivol, flow meter) and using field forms or field laptop / tablet for digital data collection
  • All of the above to be handled according to international standards under guidance of senior team members
  • Wildlife Monitoring around the TSF pond area

Reclamation / Erosion & Sediment Control: Assist in fieldwork program with the following activities related to erosion and sediment control:

  • Hydro seeding, coconut mat placement and vetiver planting
  • Seeds and seedling collection in the field during Vegetation Disturbance Permit inspection
  • Composting – collection of compost material from the field and task associated with compost (wetting + turning of material), chipping of brown material using the chipper / shredder
  • Nursery operations – watering of plants, removal of weeds, planting of collected seeds and seedlings
  • Maintenance / housekeeping of equipment.
  • Cut tree logs using chain saw for erosion and sediment control purposes
  • Plant trees on areas approved and ready for reclamation
  • Assist with post rain inspection for erosion issues at monitoring locations and report to supervisor

Waste management

  • Inspect on proper waste segregation and receive Hazardous and Non hazardous waste
  • Incinerate hazardous waste (hydrocarbon contaminated rags + absorbent + medical waste)
  • Make waste ready for shipment which includes but not limited to dismantling of IBC totes, cutting of totes, shredding of bottles, puncturing of aerosol cans etc.)
  • Report waste data processed on site to supervisor
  • Including operation of waste handling equipment (puncturing equipment, telescopic handler, skid steer and compost turner)

Training & Experience

Knowledge

  • Secondary School/ Technical Diploma/Trades Degree/ Specialized Technical Training Certificate
  • Able to converse in local language (e.g. Sranan Tongo) and basic understanding of Dutch
  • Basic understanding of equipment maintenance and monitoring locations
  • Basic understanding of waste segregation and handling
  • Operation of equipment: skid steer and telescopic handler.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years in related fields
