Open Spaces Team Member
Job description
Build your career and your community. Reporting into the Supervisor, Ovals, Parks and Gardens, the position of Open Spaces Team Member is accountable for completing a range of tasks under established practices and procedures, including maintenance to Council’s parks and garden assets and the operations of various plant and equipment in a safe manner.
- Full-time, Fixed Term position
- Estimated start August 2026
- Salary package includes:
- Uniform Allowance
- Plus 12% Superannuation
- Additional 3% Council superannuation contribution
Key Objectives
- Operation and maintenance of equipment, plant, and machine, including but not limited to mowers, trailers, brush cutters and hand tools.
- Care and maintenance of water sensitive urban design areas.
- Care and maintenance of Council’s irrigation systems.
- Footpath and road verge maintenance (weed control, mowing etc.).
- Spraying herbicides for Weed Control.
- Transportation of plant and equipment.
- Understanding of work zone traffic management including traffic regulations and road rules, and the setting up of traffic control devices.
- Community event support, including marquee set up and pack up and signage.
- Playground inspections and maintenance.
- Actively participating in training and WHS programs as required.
- Reporting of incidents, near miss, injuries, property damage and identified hazards.
- Taking reasonable care to protect their own safety and the health and safety of others.
- Following reasonable instruction on health and safety and injury management.
- Must be available for on-call duty as required by the company's operational needs. This may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to respond promptly to on-call requests within 30 minutes during designated on-call hours.
- Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the Council.
Essential Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrated experience in operating machinery such as ride-on mowers, chainsaws, chippers, mulchers, tractors, and brush cutters.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work safely as part of a team.
- Physically fit and able to undertake manual work in an outdoor environment.
- Drivers Licence - Class MR
- Completion of Year 10 and/or an appropriate labour market program or similar work/skills.
- For trade-based employees - Hold an appropriate Equipment Operator Qualification for the relevant Council plant.
Highly regarded but not essential Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge & Skills
- Chemcert Certificate
- Certificate in Horticulture
- Work zone Traffic Management
- Demonstrated Experience in Similar Position or Industry
Key performance indicators
- Council Reserves are maintained to high standard.
- Completion of Operations projects on time and budget.

- Junior rates apply: 17 years old and under 62% ($21.98 per hour), 18 years old is 72% ($25.53), 19 years old is 82% ($29.07 per hour) and 20 years old is 92% ($32.62 per hour) of hourly rate listed.
