Job description
About the Role
Allianz Technology SE is looking for a Senior Database Administrator to join our Technology & Infrastructure team. The primary focus of this role is PostgreSQL — both cloud-hosted (AWS and Azure) and on-premises deployments on Linux hosts. In addition, experience with MongoDB Atlas is valued and will play an increasing part in our database landscape.
You will own the design, operation, and continuous improvement of our relational and document database estates. Working closely with application development teams, cloud engineers, and security stakeholders, you will ensure our databases are performant, resilient, and compliant with Allianz and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
PostgreSQL
Install, configure, and maintain PostgreSQL databases across cloud environments (AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure Database for PostgreSQL) and on-premises Linux hosts, covering version upgrades, patch management, and parameter tuning.
Monitor database health and performance using cloud-native tooling (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor) and third-party observability platforms; proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks in both cloud and on-prem deployments.
Optimise query performance through indexing strategies, query rewriting, and execution plan analysis (EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE).
Support data migrations using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) or Azure Database Migration Service, including schema conversion, replication configuration, and cutover planning.
Manage and maintain PostgreSQL deployments on Linux hosts: OS-level tuning (kernel parameters, storage I/O), service management, and integration with enterprise monitoring and backup tooling.
MongoDB Atlas
Manage MongoDB Atlas clusters, including provisioning, scaling, and configuration of dedicated and shared-tier deployments across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
Administer Atlas backup and restore procedures: continuous cloud backups, snapshot scheduling, and point-in-time recovery.
Implement and maintain Atlas network security controls: VPC/VNet peering, private endpoints, IP access lists, and encryption at rest/in transit.
Monitor Atlas clusters and configure alerting: metrics thresholds, integration with external observability tools, and Performance Advisor recommendations.
Manage Atlas database users, roles, and X.509 certificate-based authentication in line with least-privilege principles.
Work with Atlas Data Federation to query across Atlas clusters, S3 buckets, and other data sources using federated queries.
Support teams using Atlas Search (Lucene-based full-text search indexes), Atlas Triggers, Functions, and App Services for event-driven integrations.
Use the Atlas CLI and Terraform Atlas provider for infrastructure-as-code cluster lifecycle management.
General
Develop and maintain database documentation, standard operating procedures, runbooks, and disaster recovery playbooks covering both PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
Collaborate with application development teams to review and optimise database schemas, data models, and query patterns across both platforms.
Automate routine operational tasks using Bash, Python, or SQL scripts and infrastructure-as-code tooling (Terraform, AWS CDK).
Participate in the on-call rotation for database support and incident response.
Required Skills & Qualifications
PostgreSQL (Mandatory)
5+ years of hands-on experience as a PostgreSQL DBA in production environments.
Deep understanding of PostgreSQL internals: MVCC, WAL, autovacuum, logical and physical replication.
Proven experience managing PostgreSQL on cloud platforms — AWS (RDS, Aurora) and/or Azure (Azure Database for PostgreSQL) — including parameter groups, high-availability configurations, and read replicas.
Solid experience administering PostgreSQL on Linux hosts: OS-level tuning, storage configuration, service management, and integration with enterprise backup solutions.
Strong proficiency with performance tuning: EXPLAIN/EXPLAIN ANALYZE, index design (B-tree, GIN, GiST, partial indexes), and statistics management.
Design, implement, and regularly test backup and disaster recovery strategies — including cloud-managed snapshots and point-in-time recovery — to meet defined RTO/RPO targets.
Enforce database security best practices: role-based access control, encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, and network isolation, in line with Allianz security policy.
Lead capacity planning and storage optimisation; right-size cloud instance types and tune on-premises hardware and OS-level parameters to balance performance and cost.
Troubleshoot and resolve performance issues, connection pool exhaustion, and replication failures within agreed SLA timeframes.
Plan and execute database upgrades, major version migrations, and configuration changes with minimal service disruption, across both cloud and on-premises environments.
Experience designing and testing HA/DR solutions across both cloud-managed and self-hosted PostgreSQL deployments.
Practical experience with cloud database migration services (AWS DMS or Azure DMS) for homogeneous and heterogeneous migrations.
Scripting proficiency in at least one of: Bash, Python, or SQL for automation and operational tooling.
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code principles (Terraform or equivalent).
Strong understanding of database security controls: encryption, RBAC, audit logging, and network isolation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear technical documentation.
MongoDB Atlas (Advantageous)
Experience managing MongoDB Atlas clusters across cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP).
Familiarity with Atlas backup strategies, network security controls, monitoring, and alerting configuration.
Ability to manage Atlas users, roles, and certificate-based authentication in line with least-privilege principles.
Exposure to Atlas Data Federation, Atlas Search, Triggers, and App Services.
Experience with the Atlas CLI and Terraform Atlas provider for infrastructure-as-code provisioning.
A fundamental grasp of AI tools will be an added benefit.
