The Automotive Painter supports Base Support Vehicles and Equipment (BSVE) operations by performing painting, refinishing, surface preparation, and corrosion control on a variety of base vehicles, heavy equipment, utility trucks, material-handling equipment, tactical support vehicles, and related components. This role ensures fleet appearance, protection, and longevity through high‑quality coatings and refinishing work, following all base safety standards, environmental regulations, and technical procedures.
Responsibilities
- Prepare vehicle and equipment surfaces for painting by washing, sanding, grinding, masking, priming, and removing corrosion.
- Apply primers, base coats, top coats, military coatings, and specialty protective finishes using spray guns, brushes, and rollers.
- Perform touch‑ups, spot repairs, and complete refinishing on vehicles, trailers, heavy equipment, generators, and support equipment.
- Match paint colors and textures using manufacturer specifications or custom blending techniques.
- Repair dents, scratches, rust, and minor body damage using fillers, sanders, grinders, and hand tools.
- Apply corrosion‑resistant coatings, undercoating, and rust‑proofing materials to extend vehicle and equipment lifecycle.
- Remove and install decals, reflective markings, stencils, and base identification graphics according to base guidelines.
- Ensure proper curing, drying, and finishing of coatings to meet durability and appearance standards.
- Operate and maintain spray booths, paint mixing systems, compressors, sanding tools, and related equipment.
- Follow base environmental requirements for hazardous materials handling, waste disposal, VOC compliance, and air quality control.
- Maintain work documentation, labor hours, and materials usage in CMMS systems such as MAXIMO.
- Coordinate with automotive mechanics, body repair technicians, shop leads, and supervisors to meet operational priorities.
- Support emergency or mission‑critical repairs requiring immediate refinishing or corrosion control.
- Maintain clean and organized tools, equipment, and work vehicles.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, early and late shifts N/A
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education / Certifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have a driver’s country of origin license.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
Experience
- At least two (2) years’ experience automotive painting, industrial coating, or body shop repair required
Skills & Technology Used
- English proficiency Reading & Speaking Level 2, Writing Level 1
- Knowledge of modern refinishing techniques, primers, coatings, corrosion control, and color matching
- Ability to operate spray equipment and perform detailed surface prep
- Understanding of military or fleet painting standards (e.g., CARC or similar coatings) preferred
- Familiarity with safety standards regarding HAZMAT, PPE, ventilation, and paint booth operations
- Ability to lift, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work in varied environments
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship

- Vehicle lifts, jacks, creepers, and material-handling equipment
- CMMS platforms (MAXIMO or equivalent) for work orders and documentation
Working Environment
- Must be capable of working in an extreme weather condition with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months).
- Includes some industrial production conditions as well.
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
- The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard about the ambient noise level.
Physical Activities
- Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
- Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
