Position Summary

The Extra Help Natural Science Laboratory Assistant II will weigh animals, prepare them for experiments, and assist in gross autopsies by preparing instruments and making incisions as directed. The position will also maintain meticulous digital and physical logs of animal pedigrees, birth dates, and experimental statuses. The Natural Science Laboratory Assistant II will keep accurate records of data gathered from tests on animals, or other experimentations (food intake, physiological reactions, weight changes, skin lesions, etc.)

Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs a normal variety of routine technical tasks that require proficiency and skill in a limited number of methods and techniques, working with general instructions and with allowance for minor deviations from established procedures.
• Performs standard and repetitive technical procedures.
• Prepares diets from written recipes requiring careful weighing and mixing of several different ingredients.
• Weighs animals, prepares them for experiments, and assists in gross autopsies by preparing instruments and making incisions as directed.
• Maintain meticulous digital and physical logs of animal pedigrees, birth dates, and experimental statuses.
• Oversee breeding programs, including pairing, weaning, and ear-notching/tagging for identification.
• Keeps accurate records of data gathered from tests on animals, or other experimentations (food intake, physiological reactions, weight changes, skin lesions, etc.)
• Performs a variety of technical measurements (weighing animals, using analytical balances, spectrophotometers, and colorimeters).
• Requisitions, cares for, and maintains laboratory items (equipment, supplies, specimens, and charts).
• Adjusts, calibrates, replaces broken parts, and keeps laboratory equipment in good repair.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below:
• Coursework in natural science (such as biology, veterinary medicine, chemistry, physiology, microbiology) as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
• 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
• Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
• 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
• Work experience in a natural science laboratory (such as biology, veterinary medicine, chemistry, physiology, or microbiology laboratory techniques).
